China no longer dominate diving pool, says German coach

DAEGU, South Korea, Aug. 27 (Xinhuanet) -- The Chinese diving teams till excels but is not the best one in the world, the German diving team leader and head coach said at the 22nd World University Games here on Wednesday.

Stefan Nitsche, who witnessed Chinese divers' disappointment at the world swimming championships last month in Barcelona, sang high praise for the Chinese team at the Universiade and cautiously viewed the scenario in the diving pool.

He agreed with the opinion, shared by the Chinese media, that some European divers have outrun their Chinese counterparts in difficulty degrees. "They used to lead in all competitions, but it's normal development (for European divers to catch up). They are still one of the best team now," Nitsche said.

The Chinese "dream" diving team were expected to win 4-5 medals out of a total of eight in Olympic program at Barcelona but ended up three plus a gold in men's 1m springboard, which has yet to be included into the Olympic Games.

"Here in the Universiade, they are absolutely the best since they are top divers of the country. But in the world, they are not in some disciplines," he added.

Nitsche, who came to Beijing two years ago for the previous Universiade, now leads the German student team to compete at Daegu.

Ditte Kotzian and C. Schmalfuss of Germany, who ranked fourth in women's three-meter srpingboard synchronized event in Barcelona, lost to newly-crowned world champion pair Guo Jingjing and Wu Minxia Monday. The Germans picked up the silver here.

Tobias Schellenberg of Germany, bronze medalist in men's three-meter synchronized event and fifth on men's 1m springboard at Barcelona, finished third in men's 1m springboard competition Monday as Chinese Wang Feng and Wang Tianling took gold and silver respectively.
